During the workshop you will colour your products selected from the porcelain Oer tableware collection. The tableware collection consists of cups, bowls and plates and for the colour you can choose from different oer glazes. With these glazes you can colour the white porcelain by using different easy to use techniques to create a large variety of different drawings and patterns. Before you start we will show you different examples of the results we have made ourselves and tell you more about the project, the different Oer glazes and possible techniques you can use.

All the products from the Oer tableware collection are made of porcelain and are cast in a mold made of plaster. Once out of the mold the ceramic products are dried and then fired in the kiln at 1060 degrees Celsius at low heat. After cooling they are ready to be applied with a glaze. This step of the production process is called ‘biscuit’. When the products are applied with the glaze they are once more fired in the kiln at 1260 degrees Celsius at high heat. This last and final step is called ‘glaze firing’. Finally after cooling the products are ready for use.

About the Oer project

Within the Oer project Kirstie van Noort and Lotte de Raadt investigate different possibilities for the application of iron sludge in ceramics. The iron sludge is locally sourced from water production plants in Brabant. In the future the Oer project will use iron sludge from water production plants in other locations. Each location will give a different shade of iron oxide to ceramic products of the Oer project.
